Occurrence and identity of Plant parasitic Nematodes on the Foreshores around Laguna de Bay used for crop Production
Issue Date
1-1990
Abstract
The following plant parasitic nematodes were identified in a three-year survey of foreshore areas used for crop production around Laguna de Bay: root-knot nematode Meloidogyne spp.;reniform nematode Rotylenchulus reniforms (Linford and olivera, 1940); stunt nematode Tylenchorhynchus sp.; spiral nematode Helicotylenchus sp.; lesion nematode Pratylenchus sp.; lance nematode Hoplolaimus sp.; sheath nematode Hemicycliophora sp.; and ring nematode Hemicriconemoides sp.;
Root-knot nematode species and races identified were: Meloidogyne incognita, races 1, 2 anf 4;M. arenaria, races 1 and 2; and M. javanica.
Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White, 1919; Chitwood, 1949) was the more common root-knot nematode which was identified. This represented 77% of the total population collected. Half of the M. incognita population belonged to race 2.
Sixteen of the root-knot nematode populations had tomato as their original host, while 10 had okra and 8, eggplant as their original hosts. M. incognita race 1 was the predominant species in tomato while M. incognita race 2 was more common in okra and eggplant.
Both root-knot and reniform nemotodes were the more prevalent nematodes associated in vegetable crops, occurring in excessive numbers. Bittergourd (Momordica charantia) was the most susceptible host to both nematodes. Celery, eggplant and musturd were also good hosts for the root-knot nematode, while squash, tomato and pole beans were more suitable for the reniform nematode.
Nematode infection declained with the rising of the lake's tide. The build-up or declaine in population were influenced by the cropping pattern used.
