Isolation, incidence and identification of bacteria from Laguna de Bay

Issue Date

6-1990

Abstract

A total of 453 bacterial strains, isolated from different sites in Laguna de Bay, namely Mayondon, Kalayaan, Jala-Jala, Pasig-Parolan and Alabang, and gathered in 1984 and 1985, were subjected to various morphological, cultural, nutritional and physiological tests for possible identification. Twenty-two bacterial genera were identified as Aeromonas, Citrobacter, Edwardsiella, Enterobacter, Escherichia, Hafnia, Klebsiella, Proteus, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio, Yersinia, Acinetobcter, Bacillus, Flavobacterium, Micrococcus, Planococcus, 'Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, and Streptomyces. All but the genus Erwinia in the family Enterobacteriaceae were detected. Klebsiella spp. were detected in all the water samples. However, it was most prevalent in the samples from Mayondon, Kalayaan, and Jala-Jala. It was also the most predominant genus, its incidence level highly significant among all the other genera. This indicates pollution since species from the family Enterobacteriaceae are components of the intestial flora of man and other animals.
