Larentiinae (Lepidoptera) of the Philippine highlands
Issue Date
10-2009
Abstract
Current inventory on Philippine Larentiinae yielded 44 species in 35 genera. Summary of the general information derived from second-hand data confirmed that tropical larentiine moths were highland species, save for a single moth collected from Mt. Makiling in 1950. So far, this moth awaits species delineation. The Natural History Museum in London maintains most of the Larentiinae specimens collected in the country. In addition to this, 23 Philippine larentiine holotypes were described in the past 100 years by West and Prout. Species descriptions thereafter have been erratic to scarce. Of the localities visited by these naturalists, Haight's place was the type locality mentioned in majority of described species. Recent attempts to recollect these moths from the same site were unsuccessful because of landscape modifications (i.e. agriculture). However, there are still new larentiine moths recorded from other areas of North Luzon.
