Abstract
On February 3, 2009, beetles were found infesting 20 days old seedlings of the corn variety Bioseed 9909 planted in a 200 square meter area at Sitio Dalia, Barangay Pamantingan Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat. The damage was similar to that of the larvae of the corn semi looper, Chrysodexis eriosoma. All the seedlings perished due to heavy feeding. The pest was reported in 1999 as new record in the Philippines. the description, nature of damage and alternate hosts are similar across infested corn fields monitored in Luzon, Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao. As of March 16, 2009 a total of 8 ha have been attacked by this pest in Mindanao. Contact insecticides are being used to control this new pest. The insect has also been detected in Barangay Fugo, Ilagan, Isabela last March 2, 2009.
