Abstract

This study was conducted from January 2008 to March 2009 at NCPC-CPC, UP Los Baños to determine if the ingestion of Cry1Ab protein is hazardous to Eurema hecabe tamiathis (Frustorfer) and Danaus chryssipus (Linnaeus) larvae since they are most likely exposed to Bt corn pollen in the field. Bioassay test through leaf dip method for E. hecabe tamiathis and D. chryssipus were conducted using 10x the maximum Cry1Ab protein concentration found in Bt corn pollen (0.09 ug/g pollen). Bt corn pollen feeding was done also for E. hecabe tamithis. In the initial test, 80 E. hecabe tamiathis larvae were exposed to Cassia alata leaves which had been soaked in Cry1Ab protein solution. For D. chryssipus, 50 larvae were exposed to elaves of C. gigantea which had been soaked to the same solution. Then, 200 three-day-old E hecabe tamithis larvae were exposed to C. alata leaves dusted with Bt corn pollen and another 200 larvae exposed to leaves dusted with sweet corn (SG-75) pollen as control. A total of 21 larvae on the elaf with Bt corn pollen died on the leaf with sweet corn pollen. The mean percentages larval mortality and mean larval weights for the treated and control groups were statistically compared using t-test. The difference in mortality of the treated and control means was not significant (P = -0.89). The difference in weight between the treated and control groups of larvae was also not significant (P = -0.019). Results on E. hecabe tamiathis and D. chryssipus using the Cry1lab protein also showed no significant difference on the mortality percentages in two treatments.
