Preference of dominant post harvest pest, Sitophilus oryzae, for newly released inbred rice varieties and its effects on seed quality

Abstract
Warehouse and laboratory research was conducted to evaluate feeding preference of the post harvest pest, Sitophilus oryzae, for selected popular inbred and hybrid rice varieties at PhilRice Central Experiment Station (CES) and determine the susceptibility of these varieties to the pest. Seven varieties were used for the preference test, namely; NSIC Rc130, NSIC Rc138, NSIC Rc128, PSB Rc82, NSIC Rc146, NSIC Rc134 and M3 ( Mestizo-parental). Results of monthly monitoring showed that seed damage by S. oryzae significantly varied among the varieties tested reaching as high as 21% over the 5-month period of storage. NSIC Rc130 and PSB Rc82 were also found preferred by S. oryzae, with mean seed damage significantly higher than that in control. With the preference exhibited by S. oryzae for different rice varieties, the morphological and physico-chemical composition of hybrid (M3) and popular inbred rice seeds need to be explored and validated to explain possible attraction of post harvest insects resulting in greater preference of the pest for specific varieties of rice during storage.
