Sustainability of stag beetle management in Palawan
Issue Date

Abstract
Stag beetles (Order Coleoptera: Family :Lucanidae), being scavengers feeding on rotten logs of trees, pose no serious threat to the environment. Their aesthetic value has attracted many enthusiast that led to trading of these beetles in foreign countries such as Japan, Korea, and Europe. The confiscation of a huge consignment of these beetles by the staff of the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) has reached an alarming level and has raised the need to resolve the problem of illegal trading that has become rampant in Palawan. "Ranching", a captive breeding technique proposed by Mr. Rowell Rodriguez, leads to the assessment of stag beetle population in Palawan. Development of effective captive breeding techniques will help sustain stag beetle population and reduce habitat destruction.
