Common mite pests of ornamentals and their phytoseid predators

Abstract

A number of plant-feeding species of mites are common and sometimes cause serious damage on their ornamental plant hosts. These are Eotetranychus smithi (McGregor) especially on roses; Eutetranychus africanus (Tucker) on bauhinias, coral plant and mussaendas; Oligonychus biharensis (Hirst) on bauhinias, Floribunda rosesand power puff; tetranychus fijiensis Hirst on dieffenbachias, heliconias and palms; T. kanzawai Kishida, on Impatiens; T. pierce McGregor on ornamental banana and ti plant; T. truncatus Ehara on bauhinias, bougainvillea and ivory plant; T. urticae Koch on chrysanthemums, gerbaras and roses; Brevipalpus spp. on many ornamentals; Tenuipalpus pacificus Baker on orchids; and Tuckerella ornata (Tucker) on arborvitae or Cypress. The more common predators are as follows: Amblyseius largoensis (Muma), A. phillipsi McMurtry and Schicha, A. tamatavensis Blommers, Chanteius, Chanteius contiguus (Chant), Neoseiulus calorai (Corpuz and Rimando), N. longispinosus (Evans) and Proprioseipsis lenis (Corpuz and Rimando).
