Issue Date

Abstract

Mt. Palali-Mamparang range is included in the Caraballo Mountain Range situated in the provinces of Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija and Quirino. No insect collection records had been established during the past years in the said area. In 2007, a preliminary survey of the insect fauna of Mt. Palali was conducted. The sampling site is situated in the municipality of Quezon, Nueva Vizcaya. Transect lines along elevational gradients were followed. Insect collection was done by hand picking and the use of insect net and beating sheet. Collected specimens were pinned and identified. Preliminary identification revealed that the 235 individuals collected represent 42 families and 10 orders. Orders Coleoptera (42 species), Lepidoptera (31 species), and Hemiptera (13 species) are represented by more species collected during the survey than the others. New insect records and new species were recorded. Further identification and analysis of species distribution along elevational and other ecological gradients is in progress. A follow-up survey is necessary to established the diversity of insects of Mt. Palali.
