Abstract

A laboratory rearing technique for Proctolaelaps yinchaunensis was described. The rearing unit was a rectangular plastic vat with cover, the bottom side provided with sterilized moist coir dust, 1-inch thick. On top of the coir dust, black plastic sheet was placed. At the center of the vat, a plate with a scoop of Suidasia mites was placed as prey source. Fifty to 100 predators from the stock culture were introduced and Suidasia prey was replenished at least twice a week and at the same time the coir dust was moistened. After four weeks of continuous rearing, the culture was split for further rearing or release in the field. The method is easy, simple, and convenient to use in large scale production of the predator. The same technique was found applicable for rearing other species of phytoseid predators.
