Crop protection practices and pest problem perceptions of sampaguita farmers in San Miguel, Bulacan

Issue Date

Abstract

The common practices in controlling pests of Sampaguita and the growers' perceptions of the problems in San Miguel, Bulacan were documented for the first time. The common pests cited were the "uod berde (green worm), pilantik (maggots), hanip na puti (white mites),and maliliit na tipaklong (small grasshoppers)". The insecticides commonly used to control the pests were Lannate, Sumicides, Cymbush, Karate, Brodan, Ascend. Spraying was usually done every two days, daily, twice a day, or even thrice (in the morning, afternoon and midnight) especially when price of Sampaguita flower buds was high. The insecticides Hylox and Sevin were used to drive away insects, Lannate was believed to promote growth and development of flushes. The insecticide Hercules was used as defoliator which, at higher dose, caused yellowing and premature falling-off of leaves. The purpling of buds was perceived to be caused by "bangyaw (a kind of fly)" which norm ally alights on sampaguita in bloom, and the subsequent appearance of maggots which they call "pilantik". A grower once pruned his plants because of rotten buds which he attributed to inadequate spraying, although he mentioned hamog (dew), ambon (drizzle), hayop (animal) as the causes.
