TBS + TC: a tool for determining the best time to implement community-wide rat control measures

Issue Date

10-2003

Abstract

Higher rat activity, based on trap catches using the trap barrier system + trap crop (TBS + TC), occurred in the rice field up to maximum tillering stage in both dry and wet season croppings of 2002. This points to a window for implementing control measures to reduce the initial population at the beginning of the cropping season. More female than male rats were trapped during the dry season while there were more males than females during the wet season. Only 2.34% of the rats trapped had body longer than the tail. This indicates that one rat species predominates in the study site. More rat damage was recorded in the area with no TBS + TC than in areas where TBS + TC was established. The above results show the effectiveness of TBS + TC in reducing rat damage and as an indicator for the proper timing of community-wide physical rat control program.
