Mass-rearing Dichromothrips corbetti (Priesner) (Thripidae: Thysanoptera)
Issue Date
10-2003
Abstract
A laboratory technique for mass-rearing Dichromothrips corbetti (Priesner) is presented. This was part of a three-year project entitled "Development of an effective pest management scheme against two major arthropod pests of orchids with biological control as main component," funded by the DA-BAR from October 1999 to September 2002. The method is easy, simple and convenient to use. It made use of whole flowers of Vanda orchids for oviposition and feeding, tissue paper as pupation material, ziplock plastic cages that minimizes loss through escape and facilities handling and observation. With the technique, large number of larvae, pre-pupae, pupae or adults of known and uniform ages can be produced as test materials for predator-prey experiment, toxicological bioassays and other studies.
