Low-temperature in-bin drying and storage of paddy in the humid tropics

Issue Date

Abstract

A low-temperature in-bin drying and storage (LT-IBDS) system was tested to determine its adaptability to farmers' cooperatives and enable them to efficiently handle, dry and store grains in greater quantities and maintain rice quality. The technology was assessed in relation to the actual processing operations of the farmers' cooperatives and was evaluated in terms of its technical viability and economic impact on the operation of farmers' cooperatives.

Results of the drying trials showed that initial grain quality was maintained with the use of LT-IBDS. Moreover, economic analysis indicated that the LT-IBDS is economically viable and the adoption of said technology will further increase the income of farmers' cooperatives. Utilization of LT-IBDS will also pave the way towards progressive conversion of existing bag-based operations to bulk handling and storage system, which is a requirement for producing highly competitive grain products that conform with the projected GATT-WTO standards.
