Abstract
The biology of Ceratothrips reticulatus Reyes (Thripidae: Thysanoptera) on tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum (L.) Karst] was studied under ordinary room conditions. The host plant range, biological enemies and sex ratio were also observed under field conditions. Ceratothrips reticulates reproduces biparentally and parthenogenetically (parthenogenetic-oviparous). A significant difference in the life history, longevity, and post-oviposition period was observed with respect to rearing time, and on pre-oviposition period with respect to the type of reproduction. The incubation period of the eggs ranged from 3-7 days (x = 3.63 ± 0.79 days). The duration of the larval stadia are as follows: larva I, 1-2 days (x = 2.73 ± 0.53 days) and larva II, 2-5 days (x = 2.73 ± 0.53 days). The duration of the pupal stadia are: prepupa, 1-2 days (x = 1.21 ± 0.39 days); and pupa, 1-3 days (x = 1.93 ± 0.42 days). The total development period ranged from 9-14 (x = 10.12 days (x = 1.93 ± 0.42 days). The total developmental period ranged from 9-14 (x = 10.12 ± 0.68 days). With respect to rearing time, the pre-oviposition period ranged from 1-2 days (x = 1.03 ± 0.17 days); oviposition period, 3-24 days (x = 10.41 ± 5.59 days; and post-oviposition period, 0.-9 days (x = 1.85 ± 2.06 days). Adult longevity ranged from 4-29 days (x = 13.20 ± 6.87 days) and female fecundity ranged from 8-165 ( x = 72.38 ± 45.65 eggs/ female). The natural enemies of C. reticulates include, the anthocorid bug, Orius tantillus (Motschulsky) (Anthocoridae: Hemiptera), three species of spiders, namely, Coleosoma bland Cambridge (Theridiidae), Chrysso sp. (Theridiidae) and Neoscona molemensis Tikader and Bal (Araneidae), and two fungal pathogens, Beauveria bassiana and a tentatively identified Aspergillus sp. Ceratothrips reticulates also completed its life cycle on the following plants: Irish potato, eggplant, red pepper, bitter gourd, cucumber, bush sitao and throw apple. A female to male ratio of 1.20:1 was recorded on the fruiting stage of the tomato.
