Characteristics of bovine semen collected, processed, and stored at NABC-Alabang

Abstract

Monthly mean data from the National Artificial Breeding Center (NABC), Alabang, Metro Manila from 1988 to 1992 were analyzed. A total of 197 monthly mean ejaculates was used to evaluate bovine seminal characteristics which included semen volume (ml), pH, normal, abnormal, and total sperm counts (10%/ml), percent motility (initial, before freezing, and after thawing), and number of straws produced per collection.

Simple means and standard deviations of the various seminal characteristics generally fall within the range of normal values reported in the literature. The correlation analysis showed that the number of straws produced per collection is significantly (P<.01) affected by the volume of semen, various sperm counts, and post-thawing motility. Total sperm count is highly correlated (P<.01) to normal (r= .77) and abnormal sperm counts (r-.73, but the number of normal sperms is not related to the number of abnormal sperms. All sperm counts were, however, found to be correlated (P<.01) with post-thawing motility. The pH of the semen is not related to all other semen parameters.

Analyses of variance were used to demonstrate the significant effects of each bull, time of semen collection (year, month, and a.m./p.m.), and two-factor interactions among them, on the various seminal characteristics. Significant bull and year effects were generally found for all seminal characteristics. The volume of semen, normal and abnormal sperm counts were significantly affected by the month of collection. Significant differences in pre-freezing and post-thawing motility and number of straws produced per collection are found when semen is collected at different times of the day. All possible two-factor interactions seem to be important, except for year x time of the day and month x time of the day interactions. Large differences between pre-freezing and post-thawing motilities (about 57% of the mean pre-freezing motility) were also observed.
