Effect of nitrogen on fresh ear yield, protein content and micronutrient concentration of sweet corn

Issue Date

Abstract

The study investigated the effects of different nitrogen application rates (120, 160, 200, 240, 280, 320 and 360 kg N ha(-1)) on fresh ear yield, kernel protein content and micronutrient concentration of sweet corn and was conducted in 2003 and 2004 in Sanliurfa, Turkey. Effects of nitrogen levels were significant (P < 0.01) for all measured parameters. The highest fresh ear yields (15.72-16.10 t ha(-1)) were obtained at 240 kg N ha(-1), while the lowest values were obtained at 120 kg N ha(-1) (5.80-6.30 t ha(-1)) in both years. Fresh ear yield decreased at N applications higher than 240 kg ha(-1). n content ranged from 13.4% (120 kg ha(-1)) to 21.4% (360 kg ha(-1)) and increased with higher N application. Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) was highest at 240 kg ha(-1) (67.1% and 65.5%) in both years. Iron and zinc concentration of sweet corn kernel increased whereas manganese concentration decreased with an increase in N application. Iron concentrations were between 18.3 and 25.7 mg kg(-1) whereas zinc concentrations were between 17.8 and 23.3 mg kg(-1). Copper concentration of the corn kernel increased from 4.2-4.9 mg kg(-1) at 240 kg N ha(-1) but decreased with higher N application. Based on the results of regression analysis, the optimum nitrogen application for sweet corn was 240 kg ha(-1).
