Communication variables associated with utilization of upgraded goat production technology in Nueva Ecija, Philippines

Issue Date

Abstract

The Central Luzon State University- Small Ruminant Center undertook its genetic improvement for native goats (Capra hircus) under the auspices of the University's Goat Upgrading Technology Commercialization Program in Nueva Ecija, Philippines from 1993 to 1999. A peek into the farmers technology utilization behavior is quite relevant, as generation of agricultural technologies becomes meaningless if they are not utilized and would not result into benefits for those who matter most- the farmers.

This study is an attempt to answer the main question: how can communication variables be described, interpreted or explained in relation to farmers' level of technology utilization? Farmers served as the main respondents of the study, with supplementary interviews from key informants. Triangulation techniques were used in data gathering in three areas of Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Based on the findings, communication was found to be a vital building block of technology utilization among farmers. The technology flowed through a nexus of indigenous information brokers of communication paraprofessionals. information seeking/sharing, communication networking and participation in technology development programs were associated with utilization of technology. Farmer-cooperators had a high level of technology utilization but overall, farmers had a moderate level of technology utilization. Hence, there is still a need to sustain, enhance or improve their knowledge, attitude and utilization levels because technology utilization varies with time.

The study recommends a support communication model which may find application in any technology promotion and utilization activities. Communication media, whether interpersonal, mass media- based or traditional media-based, have to be dialogic reciprocal or participatory.
