Evaluation of potato (Solanum spp.) germplasm in the Philippines for resistance to thrips, thrips palm karny

Issue Date

Abstract

A total of 440 white potato clones and varieties were screened in the field and verified in the greenhouse for thrips resistance for three consecutive years. Results indicate that the best time to evaluate thrips resistance is at 2 months from plant emergence based on damage rating instead of insect count. This period covers part of the plant growth when thrips damage is most critical. Late dry season field planting (January under Los Baños conditions) coupled with two applications of a selective insecticide at early plant growth stage to control the natural enemies of the pest, enhanced thrips population build-up. Sufficient pest pressure was necessary to preclude pseudo-resistant of the test plants. Of the promising selections, Solanum chacoense and Solanum kurtzianum consistently showed highly resistant reaction to thrips while Solanum tuberous clones 9024-1, 9008-1, X-6, X-22b, 9021-1, and 8701-I-42-67b were rated resistant.
