Abstract

This study focused on understanding the intentions of Filipino online sellers to reduce overpackaging, recognizing their pivotal role in addressing packaging waste. Specifically, the study employed Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and extended it by integrating Perceived Courier Service Quality (PCSQ) to explain Filipino online sellers’ intentions to reduce overpackaging. Additionally, the study examined the mediating role of TPB constructs in the relationship between PCSQ and these intentions. Quantitative data collected from 182 Filipino online sellers revealed positive intentions among these sellers to reduce overpackaging. Results from the Partial Least Squares – Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) identified Attitude and Perceived Behavioral Control to have significant direct effects on these intentions. Furthermore, mediation analysis revealed an indirect influence of Perceived Courier Service Quality on these intentions, fully mediated by Attitude and Perceived Behavioral Control. A unique finding of this study shows the non-significance of the mediation path involving Subjective Norms; this further shows that sellers’ personal decisions/ choices are not shaped by social perceptions involving service quality, which is external, and online retailers do not have direct control of. The findings of the study offer policy, management, and practical recommendations for various stakeholders in the e-commerce sector. These recommendations emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue of increasing packaging waste in the country by developing and implementing interventions that promote sustainable packaging practices among Filipino online sellers.
