Abstract

Although teacher well-being has been widely examined, limited research has explored how grit and commitment jointly influence psychological well-being among Filipino educators within a robust theoretical framework. This study addresses this gap by investigating the role of grit and commitment in shaping teacher well-being at Palawan State University in Puerto Princesa City, Philippines. According to the Engine Model of Well-being, individual traits like grit serve as inputs that shape internal processes (e.g., teacher commitment), ultimately influencing well-being. Guided by this framework, grit was conceptualized as an input, teacher commitment as a mediating process, and psychological well-being as an outcome. Employing a quantitative, cross-sectional design, the study surveyed 626 teachers using validated questionnaires that measured grit, commitment, and workplace well-being. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to test both direct and indirect relationships among the variables. Results showed that grit significantly predicted teacher commitment and psychological well-being. Furthermore, commitment partially mediated the relationship between grit and well-being, highlighting its role in enhancing teachers’ sense of purpose, belonging, and professional fulfillment. This suggests that while grit directly enhances well-being, part of its positive effect is explained through increased teacher commitment. Perseverance of effort emerged as the strongest predictor across commitment and well-being dimensions, whereas consistency of interest demonstrated mixed effects. The proposed model yielded acceptable fit indices (CFI = .92, NFI = .91, IFI = .92), supporting its structural validity. Practical implications include incorporating grit-enhancement strategies into teacher education and professional development, alongside institutional initiatives that foster commitment and resilience.
