Mites associated with Apis mellifera Linnaeus and Apis cerana Fabricius in the Southern Tagalog Region, Philippines

Abstract

Twenty-three species of mites associated with honey bees, Apis mellifera Linnaeus and Apis cerana Fabricius were collected from the provinces of Batangas, Cavite and Laguna within the Southern Tagalog region of the Philippines. Except for the well studied bee brood parasites, Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans and Tropilaelaps clareae Delfinado and Baker, all are recorded for the first time as bee associates in the country. The acarid, Forcellinia faini Delfinado-Baker and Baker, and the aeroglyphid, Glycycometus thailandicus (Fain and Gerson) are new species records for the Philippines. The most abundant were scavengers, particularly the uropodid, Trichouropoda stercoraria Hirschmann and Hiramatsu, and the acarid, Forcellinia faini. Other species found in abundance were Tarsonemus sp. of uncertain feeding habits, Blattisocius sp. which is a predator, and Neocypholaelaps sp. which is a pollen feeder. The rest of the species were encountered only rarely and in few numbers including Varroa jacobsoni. These abundant species are illustrated, along with the new species records. Twelve species were found associated only with Apis mellifera, 7 species only with A. cerana, and 3 species with both bees.
