Title

Insect morphology: laboratory manual

Abstract

This manual is a set of exercises dealing with the different structures of an insect and their relationships. This coverage starts from the general form of the insect body and its nearest relatives and later focuses on the insect itself. The topics are grouped into four major sections with 13 exercises. The first topic covers exercises 1-4, which focuses on the head and its associated structures. The second section, exercises 5-7, deals with the thorax and appendages. The third section, exercises 8-9, expounds on the abdomen and the external organ of reproduction. And lastly, the fourth section covers exercies 10-13, focuses on the internal organs of the insect.

Morphological terms and descriptions have been based on published references which are also listed in the manual. Detailed structures to be studied for each topic will be explained in the laboratory class prior to microscopic examination. Descriptions for each structure are brief and concise and are to be appropriately labeled in the figures provided. Answers to the guide question(s) appearing at the end of each exercises should be written at the back. All figures to support all the exercises herein are all original and all were taken by the author from actual preparations and dissections of locally available specimens.
