Abstract
A brief walk-through on the evolution of forage preservation in the world and in the Philippines was made. Both systems of forage preservation, namely, hay- and silage making, were shown practiced in the Philippines. But only in the UP College of Agriculture that efforts in forage preservation, specifically silage making, were well recorded. The construction of the first silo in the College which was concrete tower type, and the first silage made, which was of corn fodder, were cited. Starting from this period, an appraisal of the research and development studies conducted on silage in the College was taken up. The efforts to promote preservation of forage in the country and the evaluation as to the acceptance of the technology were discussed. The prospect of silage making in the country was said to depend on the development of bigger feedlots and dairy farms. Smallhold cattle enterprises need to group into cooperatives and share facilities for silage making to be a viable operation.
