Abstract

No Ata Nianobo communities in Davao del Norte representing similar cultural heritage but different levels of unity in household and economic organization were compared in terms of gender relations Cabadiangan is a community where household and economic organization is closer to unity while in San Roque the household and economic organization is relatively farther away from unity Differences in unity of household and economic organization are not only evident historically as communities move from subsistence to cash oriented economies but also simultaneously in communities differentially affected by commercial capital infusion Capitalism affects the ways the households live specifically the ways the genders relate to one another The relative isolation of Cabadiangan with its subsistence economy contrasts with that of San Roque where there are relatively greater opportunities for employment and enterprises It was found that there was relatively greater 'gender parity in decision making at the household level in the latter community
