Abstract
Dogs are susceptible to a number of ehrlichial diseases. Among them, canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME) has been recognized as an important world-wide canine infectious disease (Ristic and Holland, 1993). The lecture evaluates the presence of Ehrlichia spp. in naturally infected canines. It presents a review of the ehrlichial diseases affecting dogs worldwide with reference to their origin, clinical presentation, immune responses, host specificities, and diagnosis. Furthermore, it emphasizes that history, pathogenicity, cross reactivity, clinical and laboratory findings should all be considered when interpreting Ehrlichial infection. These in turn, can be used by diagnostician to better understand the significance of various hematological and clinicopathological signs of Ehrlichia and aid in making a better value judgment in the diagnosis of ehrlichiosis. The diagnostic approach is presented along with its potential benefits.
