Integrated Coco-Livestock Production and Processing Program in Alcantara, Romblon (final report)

Abstract

The main objective of the proposed sub-project entitled 'Integrated Coco-Livestock Production and Processing Program' is to help the farmer-beneficiaries improve their productivity and household income from coconut production and processing and livestock production. It will initially cover 1,250 hectares of coconut land of the target beneficiaries. The proposed project which will be implemented and managed by the Longon Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LMPC) is located in Camili, Alcantara, Romblon [Philippines]. As supported to the project implementation, DAR [Department of Agrarian Reform] will help the Cooperative with its five proposed major technical project components, namely: Coconut Production, Procurement and Hauling, Processing, Warehouse Facility and Trading/Marketing. The Longon Multi-purpose Cooperative is presently engaged in two business enterprises namely: micro-financing and production loan. Before, the Cooperative was engaged in bulk or collective procurement of coconut processing and marketing of copra using the warehouse built by the organization as its processing and storage facility. The enterprise ceased its operation a few years ago for some reasons beyond their control. Given the active membership, committed BODs/officers, its available facilities and current positive financial status, the experience in managing consolidated procurement coconut, processing and marketing of copra, the Longon Multi-purpose Cooperative would be capable to operate and manage such as an agri-enterprise/business. The proposed CSFs (tractor with trailer and kiln dryer) will definitely help the members of the Cooperative increase their income. They are also a very big potential source of income for the Cooperative from the rental of the tractor in hauling products from the farmers on a road accessible to transportation using the trailer. Another advantage is their availability for use by the members for land preparation aside from hauling purposes considering that there is no available equipment in the community. Since the majority of the coconut farmers have not been familiar and have no experience in using the tractor with trailer and kiln dryer in cooking coconut through smoking (tapa), there is a need to provide them training on their proper use, care and maintenance especially the machine operators who will be hired by the Cooperative. On the other hand, the proposed collective trading/marketing is not a big issue because the Cooperative has been engaged in this kind of enterprise before. They have a warehouse which they can use for processing and storing the copra before selling it to the local/private traders.
