Abstract

The efficiency of the exopolysaccharide biopolymer (EPS) and partially- purified protein from Moringa oleifera seed extract (MOSE) in chromium removal from tannery wastewater was experimentally investigated. The optimal dilution of the wastewater to be used in the coagulation-flocculation runs, the optimal pH and EPS-MOSE mass ratio, and optimal dosage of EPS and MOSE were determined. The dilution used in the study was 10X which corresponds to 43.015% chromium removal. The optimal mass ratio was observed to be 1.23 at pH 5.90. The efficiency of the flocculant system at this condition was 89.695%. The optimal dosage of EPS and MOSE were 400 mg/L and 666.67 mg/L, respectively. The mean removal efficiency of the EPS-MOSE flocculant system at the optimal conditions was 99.55%. Furthermore, there was an increase in the COD value by 10.458 mg/L. The EPS-MOSE flocculant system showed potential in removing chromium metal from tannery wastewater. The main mechanism involved in the removal of chromium from tannery wastewater at the optimal conditions was sweep flocculation.
