Abstract

The landscape maintenance practice was conducted at the Anihan Gardens in Brgy. Bulacnin Lipa, City in August to November 2001. The nursery management practice, on the other hand was conducted in TROPICALIA Nursery at Bagong Kalsada Calamba, Laguna in June to August 2002.

Actual participation on the practice in landscape maintenance operation such as watering, fertilization, weeding, pruning, mowing, and pest and disease control were performed. Identification and placing labels on plants at the Hardin Filipino of the Anihan Garden were also undertaken. On the other hand, preparation of growing media, misting, propagation, transplanting and fertilization were the nursery management practices that were performed at the Tropicalia nursery.

Problems encountered during the practice were identified and analyzed. Poor scheduling of activities, lack of work delegation, lack of training and expertise and availability of funds were the problems identified during the major practice. Climate also disrupted the maintenance activities at the Anihan Gardens and caused inconvenience to the customers of the Tropicana nursery. Proper delegation of responsibilities to the workers, hiring of additional well-trained and younger workers are the specific recommendations for the proper maintenance of the landscape sites. Recommendations for the Tropicalia nursery were also given, such as adoption of a written agreement for the process of payments, and implementation of a down payment scheme to alleviate the problem in the unavailability of funds for the operations of nursery activities. For the changing climatic season, since it cannot be manipulated, preparation activities such as staking and pruning were recommended.

In the major practice provided a good exposure to the student on various landscaping processes, specifically on the maintenance aspect and in nursery management operations. The student got a hands-on experience on these activities which helped her gain self-confidence and supervisory skills in dealing with the workers. On the other hand, she had helped the site on the identification of plants and provision of name tags, which makes her more familiar with the ornamental plants
