Abstract
ABSTRACT ESTILLURE,GRACE FELIPE. University of the Philippines Los Banos. Bachelor of Science in Biology. 1993. Pollen Foraging of Apis cerana and Apis mellifera in the month of June (1992). Major Professor: Dr. Pacifico C. Payawal Pollen pellets were collected from Apis cerana and Apis mellifera colonies and were analyzed using acetolysis. About twenty one pollen species were identified. Pollen survey showed a variety of pollen species collected which were the following: Cocos nucifera L., tlim2a giAgl.ca. L., Cucurbitaceae, Rubiaceae, Myrtaceae, Composdlae, Ulmaceae, Solanaceae, Moraceae, Rutaceae, Pterocarpus indicus, Leucae-na leucocephala, Aeschynomene sp. Graminae, Malphigiaceae, Apocynaceae, Campanaluceae, Cruciferae, and some unidenti-fied and some unidentified pollen sources. Cocos quciferal L. was the dominant pollen source of A. cerana with a relative density ranging from 71.6 - 100% Mimosa pudica L. dominated the pollen spectra of A. mellifera with a relative density of 48.0 - 90.8 X followed by Cocos nucifera which also occurred at a relatively high density. Data showed that the proportion of pollen load was highest in the morning (8.00 - 10.00 a.m.) and gradually decreased in the afternoon. Pollen collecting activity also diminished when the weather changed form sunny to cloudy and to zero collection with heavy rain. Cluster analysis of the pollen data further showed that there was a low grouping pattern throughout the sampling based on the pollen spectrum. This indicates that the pollen forage by both species vary significantly at a given level of similarity.
