Abstract
PALLER, ELLEN L. University of the Philippines at Los Banos, October, 1988. "Differences in Leaf Phenol Content Between the Male, Female, and Hermaphrodite Trees of Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.), Pili (Canarium ovatum Engl.), and Papaya (Carica papaya L.) through Paper Chromatography".
Major Professor: Dr. Dolores A. Ramirez This study was conducted to determine the differences in the phenolic components of male, female, and hermaphrodite trees of Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.), Pili (Canarium ovatum Engl.), and Papaya (Carica papaya L.) by 2-dimensional paper chromatographic analysis, with 5% acetic acid (vol/vol) and butanol:acetic acid:water (6:1:1) as solvent systems. By comparison with four standards (chlorogenic acid, ferrulic acid, p-coumaric acid, and trans-cinnamic acid), results showed that variable number and kind of compounds were produced by the three different sex types of the three different fruit crops. The male, female, and hermaphrodite trees of each of the fruit crops produced different compounds or compound-combination. However, no significant difference was found in the number of compounds among sex types of a particular fruit crop. These findings, and its relation to sex determination are discussed. Recommendations are also presented.
