Abstract
The growth of Staphylococcus aureus in 9 formulations of brain-heart infusion broth was compared. The beef brain and heart were either prepared fresh or cooked, with or without peptone and using either distilled water or coconut water to dispense the mixture. DIFCO dehydrated brain-heart infusion served as the control.
Highly significant results were obtained. No significant variation were observed in the number of colonies counted in the control and the preparations containing coconut water. Preparations containing distilled water produced lower growth. In general, more growth was observed in the media prepared from fresh beef brain and heart compared to the cooked organs. Infusions from cooked brain and heart without peptone significantly (P < 0.01lowered the growth of Staphylococcus aureus.
