Abstract

Sayao, Laarni T., University of the Philippines at Los Banos, 1994.Biosorption of Ag+ ions by immobilized yeast cells ( Saccharomyces cereviseae- BB 1885 ) from aqueous silver solutions.

Studies on the adsorption of Ag+ ions by Saccharomyces cereviseae yas conducted . Results showed that the sorption of Ag+ ions increased with time of contact between the ions and the cells having a maximum Ag reduction from silver solutions at 72 and 96 hours under shaken conditions. Increasing the concentration of the cells itself with out using any carrier such as porcelain beads increased the amount of silver adsorbed in the cells.

A biotrap consisting of yeast cells imbibed into porcelain beads packed into glass columns were also studied. Optimum flow rate based on the percentage reduction in Ag adsorbed by the cells was found to be 0.5 mL/min.

Desorption of bioadsorbed Ag+ was studied using dilute Hydrochloric acid. Results showed high % recovery of bioadsorbed Ag with increasing Hydrochloric acid concentration. However, overall recovery was still relatively low.
