Abstract

Root-tip cells prepared using the acetocarmine squash technique were studied to confirm the chromosome number and describe the chromosome morphology of Allium cepa var. aggregatum G. Don, Allium cepa var. viviparum and Allium ampeloprasum L. Somatic chromosome number of 2n = 18 was observed for A cepa var. aggregatum, and A 32 but the modal chromosome count is 2n=32. Based on the position of the centromere, the chromosomes of each Allium species were categorized into two groups, namely: Group I, metacentric and Group II submetacentric. In A cepa var. aggregatum and A. cepa var viviparum, seven metacentric chromosome pairs and one submetacentric chromosome pair were observed. While in A ampeloprasum, fifteen metacentric chromosome pairs and one submetacentric chromosome pair were observed. The average relative lengths of C-metaphase chromosomes of A cepa var aggregatum ranged from 1.00-0.30 while for A. cepa var. viviparum the average relative length ranges from 1.00-0.22 and for A ampeloprasum 1.00 - 0.23.
