Abstract

The assessment of quality of groundwater in Los Banos Subdivision U, Los Banos, Laguna was done using chemical parameters for the months of July, August, and September 1999 and biological parameters for the month of March 2000. The chemical parameters examined include pH, total hardness as calcium carbonate, nitrate-nitrogen, sulfate, total dissolved solids, major cations such as calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium, and lead. The Most Probable Number (MPN) of coliforms was employed for the biological parameter. The values obtained from chemical analysis except for potassium in all the sites were within the Maximum Allowable Limit (MAL) set by the Philippine Water Quality Standards for Drinking Water (PWQSDW). For the biological parameter, however, there are three sites that exceeded the MAL after the presumptive test. The confirmatory test showed that Escherichia colt and Enterobacter were present. The values obtained were the following: pH: 5.8 to 7.6, total dissolved solids: 381 to 630 mg/L, hardness as CaCO3 145.47-210.45 mg/L, chloride: 15.24 to 35.31 mg/L, sulfate: 2.11 to 13.55 mg/L, nitrate-nitrogen: 0.54 to 3.59 mg/L, calcium: 38.05 to 65.83 mg/L, magnesium: 20.96 to 25.11 mg/L, sodium: 21.77 to 26.08 mg/L, potassium: 12.83 to 16.35 mg/L and MPN of Coliform - < 1 to 80 MPN/100 ml. The levels of lead were below detection limits in all samples. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 1% level and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% were used for the results in the examination of the chemical parameters to determine the variation due to site, date of collection and their interaction with one another. Factors also considered were the age, depth of the wells and the climatic conditions in the sampling month. The sites were all residential sites so agricultural factors were not considered. Sites 3, 4 and 8 exceeded the MAL for MPN of Coliforms. All the other sites in Los Banos Subdivision II, Los Banos, Laguna fall within that prescribed by the PWQSDW.
