Ascorbic acid concentration was determined in whole blood samples of 50 volunteer male residents from three towns (Colombo. Cabuyao, and Los Banos) in Laguna using the 2.4-dinitrophenylhydrazine method of Roe and Kucther. The correlation of whole blood ascorbic acid level with age, educational attainment, income, smoking habit, occupation. location, alcohol intake, medicine intake, and diet was investigated.
Ascorbic acid concentration in the blood was found to be higher in younger than in older subjects. Test subjects with higher educational attainment and higher income gave relat is cly higher values of ascorbic acid than those with lower level of education and kisser income. Results also suggest that subjects who were involved in stienuou, work and those taking medicine frequenib tend to have lower ascorbic acid ,,ni.:rnitation. Smoking and alcohol intake did not significantly affect the blood .i.scorbic acid concentration. Subjects consuming vegetables and fruits had blood acid concentration winch were not significantly different from those who chd rise 0..oisuna, “...getables and thins.
