Abstract

Students were heavily affected by the sudden transition to online learning in the educational institutions in the Philippines. This case study aims to explore the students' adjustment to the new mode of learning implemented in their schools through their experiences, challenges and coping mechanisms. Based on such experiences, views on online learning were analyzed. The participants of the study were 13 students enrolled in private and public schools in the higher education institutions in the province of Laguna. Information from participants were gathered through in-depth online interviews that lasted for an hour. Thematic analysis was done to analyze the experiences of the selected college students upon the implementation of online learning during the pandemic

The study revealed that students had difficulty in adjusting with the new learning environment. Some of them lose interest in studying due to limited space at their home, and experienced minimal interaction with their professors, and viewed that online learning has more requirements than face-to-face classes. Finances influence the students' capability to continue their education online. It affects their capabilities to access resources like internet connection, laptop and their space to learn in their homes. Students were overwhelmed by the increase in requirements in online learning compared to face-to-face classes which influenced their motivation in fulfilling their assigned tasks during their asynchronous classes. The limited physical interaction in online learning affects the students' learning outcomes and mental health during the implementation of online learning during the Covid-19 crisis. Students adapt to online learning to be able to continue their education amid the pandemic and complete their degrees on time. For some students, they appreciate the flexibility of online learning because they were able to learn and study anywhere and anytime. However, students would prefer to discontinue online learning because of the limited access and resources they have in their new learning environment Students accepted the implementation of online learning in consideration of other people, they can be safe during the pandemic

The findings of this study can provide other college students ways on how to cope with the challenges experienced in online learning. In addition, students can also find comfort in knowing that they share similar experiences with other students. In a way, through the findings of study, higher educational institutions can get information on how to improve its online learning implementation by addressing the challenges of the participants
