Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to appropriate an aesthetic theory for a non-art concept. Specifically, this thesis applies Aristotle’s Poetics to analyze the institution of marriage. This is not an exposition of Aristotle’s own conception of marriage. Instead only his aesthetic principle will be utilized alongside other philosophers and/or thinkers’ definition of marriage. The purpose of this thesis is to establish art not simply as something that can be seen by the naked eye, but as something that can be found embodied in institutions as well. Moreover, this thesis supposes that marriage is a tragedy as defined in Aristotle’s Poetics.
