Abstract

In the Philippines, costs of infrastructure repairs due to termite damage are estimated to amount to hundreds of millions of dollars annually. There are several different methods to control and manage termite infestation, and these can be grouped into four categories, namely: biological control, chemical control, physical control, and cultural control. Also, several termite bating technology products available in the market developed by several companies. The baiting technology targets the termite workers and soldiers themselves to be killed. It is designed to attract the termites to feed on food items with insect growth regulators that will affect their normal growth and reproduction. The general objective of this practicum was to provide the student an opportunity to apply, practice, and integrate relevant principles and techniques in entomology and pest management to address pressing problems and challenges in the industry. The major practice was conducted from June 16 to August 15, 2014 at Mega Manila Pest Management Specialists, Quezon City. The student had the opportunity to have some insights on the state of the urban pest control industry in the Philippines, and the operation of a company engaged in the business ranging from marketing and sales strategies, and on how to deal and develop trust from their clients. Furthermore, the student gained first-hand knowledge on the actual protocols on how to control termites.
