Abstract

The intern conducted her research internship by participating in a research project involved in the development of Thermosensitive Genic Male Sterile (TGMS) based two-line hybrids at Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) from June 2012- January 2013. The activities that the intern participated in were, first, in the development of TGMS lines where she was able to observe the planting and establishment of parents and to participate in hybridization and selection activities and the observation nursery. In the development of two line hybrids, she was able to observe the planting of the parents from the nursery to the field and participated in the generation of experimental hybrids and the conduct of Observational Yield Trial and Hybrid Preliminary Yield Trial. She, too, was able to participate in the conduct of Advance Yield Trial, data gathering and in data analysis. In the Advance Yield Trial, the TGMS-based hybrids entered were TGMS 31 X SN 698, TGMS 31 X SN 769, TGMS 71 X SN 722, TGMS 71 X SN 758, TGMS 71 X SN 812, TGMS 78 X SN 674,TGMS 127 X SN 742 and TGMS 130 X SN 812. The inbred check varieties used were PSB Rc 18 and PSB Rc 82. The hybrid check varieties on the other hand were NSIC Rc 204H (Mestiso 20) and NSIC Rc 202H (Mestiso 19). The result of the analysis of variance for grain yield showed significant differences among entries. All TGMS-based hybrids yielded higher than the inbred check variety, PSB Rc18. Yield advantage of the hybrids over PSB Rc 18 ranged from 35.49 to 73.78%. However, compared to the higher yielding inbred check variety, PSB Rc 82 which yielded 4238 kg ha-1, only two hybrids namely: TGMS 31 X SN 698(5424 kg ha-1) and TGMS 71 X SN 722 (5252 kg ha-1) gave a significantly higher yield at 0.05 probability level. Two hybrids, namely TGMS 31 X SN 698 and TGMS 71 X SN 722 gave a higher yield than the hybrid check variety, M19, with the mean yield of 5424 and 5252 kg ha-1, respectively. However, the yield difference was not significant. On the other hand, none of the TGMS-based hybrids have significantly outyielded the higher yielding check variety, M20.
