Abstract

Antioxidant capacity of aqueous extracts of propolis (AEP) and ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) of stingless bees (Tetragonula sp.) form Davao del Sur (Sulop, Bansalan, and Kiblawan towns) were compared by determining total polyphenol content by Folin Ciocalteu Reagent (FCR) method, and total flavonoid content by Aluminun chloride (AICI3) method. These were related to the results obtained from in vitro antioxidant assays such as Ferric Reducing Ability Power (FRAP) assay,2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging assay. All values obtained, total polyphenol content (307.72±169.49 ug GAE/ mg EEP),flavonoid content (71.54 ± 21.15 ug/QE/mg EEP) and FRAP value (27.71±19.22 mmol Fe(II)/ g EEP) were higher compared to AEP whereas EC50 values for DPPH (147.51±145.35 ug EEP/mL) and H2O2 (48.42±4.79 ug EEP/mL) scavening assays were lower compared to AEP. This indicates that bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity were significantly higher in EEP that AEP. Assay results strongly correlate with the total polyphenol content and flavonoid content indicating that polyphenols and flavonoids were responsible for the antioxidant capacity of the propolis extracts. Huge deviation in values for each test may be due to difference in the plant sources present in the three different towns from which propolis was collected.
