Abstract
A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the potential of malunggay (Moringa oleifera Lam) as supplemental feed for gestating-lactating sows. A total of eight crossbred (Landrace X Large White) sows were housed in individual pens and were distributed randomly to two treatments following a complete randomized design. Commercially prepared diets served as the control (T1). Ten percent (10%) of the control diet was replaced with malunggay leaf meal (MLM) and designated as T2. The malunggay leaf meal used in this study contained 27.82% crude protein, 34.94% NFE, 9.06% crude fiber, 6.75% crude fat, 9.27% ash, 1.37% calcium and 0.34% total phosphorus. Inclusion of 10% MLM in sows’ diets had no detrimental effect on the reproductive performance of the gestating-lactating sows. Also, higher income over feed cost was generated in terms of saleable weaned piglets as compared to the control group. Hence, MLM could be used up to 10% as supplemental feed for gestating-lactating sows.
