Abstract
The field practice was conducted at FARMTEC Foods Inc. located at J.P.Rizal St. Brgy. Sabutan, Silangh Cavite from April 27, 2011 to MAy 30, 2011. The field practice focused on the processing of semi-dried sambong and banaba into pharmaceutical powders and evaluation of plant facilities, operations and managements, by applying the theories and principles learned in agricultural process engineering courses. The raw materials in the process are semi-dried leaves that have moisture content of about 16%-20% that were dehydrated by sun drying prior to the delivery to the production plant. The range of moisture content accounts for the moisture variability since materials are from different suppliers. The goal of the process is to transform semi-dried leaves into pharmaceutical powder of 6% moisture content. Farmtec Foods, Inc. is a processing plant that produces powdered products as food ingredients that was established id 1989. The company also provides tolling, toll-manufacturing, and toll-packing services. Currently, the company has at least 15 regular products that are being supplied to more than 70 manufacturers and distributors in the country. In processing operations of semi-dried sambong and banaba pharmaceutical powder, problems were observed by the trainee. The main problem in production area is the accumulation of dusts and powder spilled from different operations and they are considered losses. Losses due to spillage are significantly high. Recommendation of having efficiency machines and equipment must be considered. Wastes management facilities of the company must be further improve considering the effect of it on the nearby residences and on the environment. The field practice done at the FARMTEC Foods, Inc. provided the trainee the knowledge and experience concerning the different operations done in processing of raw agricultural materials to its powdered form that have various uses. Proper handling of material, quality control, good manufacturing and sanitation practices are important and critical in processing food products to achieve safe and high quality products. The trainee also learned to have good working relationship with everyone.
