Abstract
The factorial experiment on the photocatalytic decolorization of Direct Congo Red dye in aqueous titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspension was conducted using the central composite design of the experiment. The process parameters known to influence the system were included in the optimization experiment: temperature (15.5-96.5C), initial pH (2-12), and irradiation time (9.9-35.1 min). In all experiments, white light was used as the light source. Initial dye concentration and TiO2 loading were fixed at 550ppm and 500ppm, respectively. The highest percent decolorization achieved experimentally was 90.16% at 56C under a pH of 2, and irradiation time of 22.5 min. A quadratic response model was established and used to predict the maximum theoretical percent decolorization. Based on this model, a maximum decolorization of 101.16% can be realized at 67C, intial pH of 2 and irradiation time of 32.3 min. Results of a confirmatory experiment showed a decolorization of 97.75% when the system is subjected to the optimum condition.
