Abstract

Parametric study on solvent extraction of crude wa from sugarcane filter cake was done. The effects of extracting solvents (absolute ethanol and petroleum ether), solvent/solid ratio (8 and 10 mL/g) and five hours extraction gave higher % yield of wax at 38.26% compared with petroleum ether, 4.79%. Wax extraction at a ratio of solvent to solid equal to 10mL/g provided a higher yield, 30.27% compared to 8mL/g solvent/solid ratio, 8.42% using ethanol as solvent in an hour of extraction. Extraction done for five hours at 8mL ehanol per ram filter cake yielded also higher amount of wax, 20.80% compared to one hour extraction, 8.42%> Yield of max had also increased at higher levels of interaction between the type of solvent and solvent/solid ratio and between solvent and time of extraction. On the other hand, the purity of wax in terms of policosanol content is only affected by the solvent/solid ratio. at increased solent/solid ratio. the purity of wax decreased from 19.36% for 8mL/g ratio to 12.47% for 10 mL/g ratio. For highkly efficient extraction of crude wax, collection of wax using absolute ethanol at 10 mL/g solvent/solid ratio extracted for five hour was the method of choice.
