Abstract

This study assessed the feasibility of tidal in-stream power plant at potential sites namely Matnog, Dalupiri and Capul in San Bernardino Strait, Philippines but only Matnog site was further assessed due to the fact that it has the highest expected velocity magnitude. Two Tidal In-Stream Energy Conversion (TISEC) devices namely TISEC Device A and TISEC Device B were then considered to compute several parameters at the chosen site. The computed values using TISEC Device A are 376.654 kW available tidal stream power, 157.588kW available electrical power, 41.839% commercial efficiency, 99.374% availability factor (AF), 1353.040 MWh annual production (AEP), Php 8.323/kWh relative Levelized Cost of Electricity (rLCOE) and 15.800% plant capacity factor (PCF).The computed values considering TISEC Device B are 297.475kW available tidal stream power, 116.794kW available electrical power, 39.262% commercial efficiency, 80.707%, AF, 814.417 MWh AEP, Php 13.827/kWh rLCOE and 11.679% PCF. TISEC Device A produced better results for all the parameters considered. The lower velocity requirements of TISEC Device A compared to TISEC Device B was found to be more advantageous at the chosen site. However,TISEC Device B would have lower overall costs when grid connection requirements would be considered.
