Abstract

The major practice in the production and management of grapes (Vitis vinifera) was conducted from January 4 to March 11, 2016 at Lomboy Farms in Brgy. Urayong, Bauang, La Union. In the 0.30 ha vineyard where the student worked, 528 vines of ?Cardinal? and ?Brazilian Hybrid? varieties were planted in a planting distance of 2.5 m. In the vineyard, watering was performed once a week, pests and disease control by spraying of chemical pesticides, nutrient management by scheduled fertilizer applications, and weeding by using motorized cutter and/or herbicides. The vines were trained by tying of stems, removal of axillary shoots, pinching of stems and thinning of berries. Among all operations performed, pruning was the most crucial in order to induce flowering and fruiting in grapes. Grapes were harvested when the level of °Brix was 18-22 and the color of the fruit cluster was uniformly red for ?Cardinal? and shiny, yellow green for ?Brazilian Hybrid?. Both varieties could give a potential yield of as much as 10 kg per vine when the total number of fruiting canes reached 64. All fresh fruits of grapes were sold directly to tourists at Php 300 per kg. In 2015, the total cost of production of grapes in the 0.30 ha vineyard of Lomboy Farms was about Php 538,087.90, inclusive of the cost of tools and equipments, materials, farm infrastructures, labor, and miscellaneous expenses. The total gross income was about PhP 1,628,950 which came from collected entrance fees of tourists (48% of the total income), sales from fresh grape fruits (44%) and grape seedlings (8%). The total net income was Php1, 090,862.10. The return of investment (ROI) on grapes was 3.03 which means for every peso spent there was a return or earnings of 2.03. Production of grapes was complicated, costly and very laborious but could also be very profitable if provided with proper management and cultivation.
