Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted at the Real Fresh Dairy Farms, Incorporated, Brgy. Masaya, Bay, Laguna and Animal and Dairy Sciences Cluster Dairy Farm, University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna from April 19 to May 15, 2010. The Real Fresh Dairy Farms, Inc. has 202 heads with 62 cows in the milking line. Whereas the ADSC Dairy Farm has 137 heads with 14 cows in the milking line. The student was tasked to observe and perform the actual practices in dairy farm operations such as cleaning of pens, milking, rectal palpation, record keeping, dehorning, ear notching, paddocks making, vitamin injection, cleaning of milking parlor and equipment, and calf rearing. During the farm practice, the student was able to compare and assess the different farm practices and management in the two farms. Technical analysis was done to further compare the two farms. The Strengths, Weaknesses, Threats, and Opportunities (SWOT) of both farms are also analysed. The problems encountered and lessons learned by student together with his recommendations were also presented in this major farm practice report.
