Abstract

Ramie plants (Boehmeria nivea, Gaud) of Saskeiseishine variety trearted with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% colchicine solution at 3, 6, 12, and 24, hours exhibited morphological characters of polyploids such as young leaves which were wrinkled, thicker, darker green, more circular and coarser in texture, and which larger pollen grains and guard cells. Some of these showed significantly higher fiber tensile strength than the control.

Some chromosome counts showed that all of the plants with external polyploid characters had diploid chromosome number, No real polyploids were produced. Possible explanations for this were discussed.
