Abstract

The root distribution of one - year old (Coco-Niño and Laguna) coconut and three- year old Laguna coconut trees were investigated in 1966 and 1968 respectively at the Department of Agronomy. Plantation Crops Section by taking the number and weight of roots. The roots were classified into four types namely, the main roots, primary rootlets, secondary and teritiary rootlets. Laguna seedlings had a generally superior constitution than Coco-Niño at one year old. Lateral roots in the three year old trees extended beyond 10 feet from the trunk and were extensive at the first two feet depth. Stony and brick-like layers at the three feet depth inhibited the penetration of roots.
